Thank you for signing up for my Web Communications service. I hope you will find it a convenient way to exchange quick and simple messages with me. I like it because it avoids phone tag, leaves a record, and allows me to answer messages at midnight, after I've done my paperwork, etc.

Another terrific feature to this site is that as a member, if I have an important announcement to make (for instance, office closures) you will be among those who receive notice well in advance. We can't call 4000 patients, but I can reach any number with a single message here. That benefits both of us.

I would like to help you use this to its greatest benefit, and avoid mutual inconvenience or disappointment by explaining a few limitations of this service.

Each patient account is like a chart. Messages under a given patient account should ONLY pertain to that patient. If you want to ask about another family member who is a patient of mine (and for whom you have a right to medical information through consent or minor status) you must send that message through that family member's account. Doing so keeps a clean and orderly chart, and avoids potential violations of federal regulations, as well.

The general messages are indeed for brief questions and answers. If you have an involved or complex or extended request or desire a more complete consultation, it might be best to make an appointment. If an appointment is not practical, then such issues would need to be arranged through the "WebVisit" format.

Refill requests made through this service MUST be submitted through the link and form dedicated to that purpose, as listed on the main page. This allows efficient flow from you to us back to you and the pharmacy. Refill requests submitted as general notes will only be returned with the reminder to use the link/form.

When requesting lab results through the service, there are a few parameters that I am willing to send actual numbers on. Mostly, I will let you know "good, bad or indifferent" type results. If you want full numbers, you may need to request a fax, or come by to pick up a copy. A more comprehensive explanation of those numbers would need to take place during an office visit or a "WebVisit"

We can cancel an appointment through this service, but we do not schedule appointments on-line. The reason for this is that there is far too much rapid, back-and-forth exchanging of information required to match availability of patient and doctor, determining time and room requirements, and confirming insurance, etc. Scheduling a single appointment could require a dozen messages to pass back and forth. So if you want to make an appointment, please call.

In a related area, office and billing staff no longer have "mailboxes" on this site. If you need to talk to a specific staff member, it is probably better to call. Our medical billing expert, Sandy, has an e-mail box that is linked elsewhere on this site. If you use it to contact her, please avoid discussion of confidential medical information, as e-mail is not secure.

You may wonder how you will know when your message has been answered. You will know, because the site will generate an e-mail message informing you that you have a message waiting for you. I actually get the same type of e-mail messages. For that reason, I request that you please refrain from sending any superfluous or unnecessary messages. "Thank you" is nice to hear, but I would rather not have to log in and click a few links just to read that. I'll assume you are happy with the service unless you tell me otherwise. (A single thank you is not a big deal, but I have over 1000 patients using this service already. Such messages can pile up in a hurry.)

I make every effort to respond to these messages within a single "business" day. Sometimes I don't make that deadline, but I try. If you don't hear from me in more than two days (and we have been open both days) you may want to send a follow-up note or make a phone call to be sure your message reached me.
